What’s the difference? Tree lopper vs Arborist

While many people think a tree lopper and an arborist are the same thing, they are in fact quite different when it comes to their skills, knowledge and training.

An Arborist is someone who is certified in Arboriculture having studied how to assess, prune and remove trees to the benefit of the tree and the client. They are also trained in tree management not only in residential settings but in commercial and industrial settings for tree maintenance and management planning.

A tree lopper typically doesn’t have any qualifications in tree management and there role is to reduce the size of trees. Tree lopping is a term used to describe reducing the height of a tree which is why you will often see large trees that have been lopped to a stump but the stump remains.

When trees are lopped significantly this sends the tree into shock and forcing it to produce new shoots from latent buds called epicormic growth. This is also referred to as secondary growth, and as it  puts on height and weight the tree is is unable to sustain it and is then prone to failure.

A certified Arborist has been trained to understand the damage this will do to a tree and to recommend alternative action plans as opposed to weakening the tree and leaving it more susceptible to pests diseases and future failures.
